TRAILERS
There is a growing need to convert existing trailers towed by agricultural vehicles from simple and limited hydraulic brakes to safer combined air and hydraulic braking systems. Modern tractors are capable of pulling ever-bigger trailers and payloads at higher speeds. Therefore common sense, not to mention current and forthcoming legislation, dictate that more effective braking systems are used on both tractor and trailer.

UK air brake specialist, Tractair, designs and manufactures air brakes for both tractors and trailers.

  • Air brakes are better than simple hydraulic systems in a number of ways, including:
  • Air systems have failsafe features and can incorporate more than one way to apply the brakes
  • They are more powerful – utilising large diameter brake chambers
  • Air brakes are far more sensitive and controllable – utilising load sensing valves & ABS
  • Air brakes are pollution free
  • Air brakes can provide park, auxiliary, and shunt brake features
The company works with trailer manufacturers to design air brakes for new trailers to suit the most demanding applications, such as military tank transporters or logging trailers.

RETROFIT KIT FOR TRAILERS

Tractair has also recently developed an easy-to-install retrofit kit for installing air brakes on existing hydraulically braked trailers with single, tandem or tri- axle configurations. The system can be installed by any competent agricultural or mechanical engineer.

The kit includes:

  • All necessary components & pipework
  • Schematic line drawings and exploded diagrams to facilitate installation

Optional extras:

  • Automatic reservoir drain valves;
  • Line filters;
  • Tyre inflation kits;
  • Shunt and park valves;
  • Universal mounting bracket that can be adapted to suit most S cam axle configurations.
  • Test equipment;
  • Manual or mechanical load sensing valves.
  • ABS is available for recent or new trailer build, where exciter rings are incorporated in the axle hubs.
Full technical support is available, including installation if required at Tractair’s factory in Yorkshire. As the company designs all its own products, bespoke air brake systems for either tractor or trailer can be designed and manufactured with confidence.
